Welcome to the website of the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (SMC)

First of all, I would like to thank you for your visit and I invite you to learn about the work carried out by the SMC. This website aims to offer citizens the maximum possible information on meteorology and climatology, according to its usefulness and the great interest and hobbies that exists in Catalonia in this field.

This is the reason why you can find all kind of information on SMC's activity, from the meteorological data generated by the meteorological equipment (4 radars, 4 lightning detectors, automatic radiosonde equipment, 190 automatic weather stations, 135 manual stations, etc) to the monitoring and projections of Climate Change, manual and automatic predictions, predictions in video format, warnings of dangerous meteorological situations, climate cartography, images from the Meteosat satellite, etc.

The Meteorological Service of Catalonia, whose functions are established by the Law 15/2001 on Meteorology, is responsible for advising the Administration of the Generalitat de Catalunya so it can carry out adequate planning of the territory, good water management and, more importantly, a good prevention of meteorological phenomena that carry a significant associated danger, through, in this case, Civil Protection is the organism that activates the corresponding emergency plans wherever is needed.

The vocation of the SMC is to be a public service, close and accessible, that reaches all the competences of a national meteorological service. We work in the direction of a progressive opening of data to citizens, obtained thanks to infrastructures acquired with public money. Within the SMC Policy we state that our main values are quality, efficiency, rigor, transparency and to take roots in the country.

I hope and wish that this website becomes a communication channel through which Catalan society can learn more about meteorology, a science so many of us are passionate about, and the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, a centenary institution.
